Info

Cambridgeshire Music, in Partnership with Cambridge Corn Exchange, commissioned Nicholas Paul Simpson to compose a special piece scored for the highly unusual combination of nine pianos. It received its world premiere at Cambridge Corn Exchange on 28 October 2014 played by internationally renowned pianist Freddy Kempf along with eight young pianists from Cambridgeshire and conducted by Jonathan James. The piece is structured around the idea of a mentor guiding pianists on a musical journey from novice to master and the parts are graded in difficulty from one to eight.

The Nine Pianos project has a dedicated website where a number of educational resources are available including a recording of the piece with Freddy Kempf paying all nine parts, sheet music and ‘Performance Minus One’ audio files that can be used to practise against. It is possible to stage your own performance using numerous other resources provided on the website.
