The Burwell Bash is a week-long folk music summer school, which has been running in Burwell, Cambridgeshire for 26 years. Participants range from 8 – 80 years old, across four different instruments and come to Cambridgeshire from across the globe to learn from world-class musicians in the warm, welcoming and supportive surroundings of Burwell House.
All of our tutors are world class players, each a respected expert in their individual instrument and tradition. All regularly tour with their bands and are highly sought after tutors and artists. Our tutors return every year and consider Burwell Bash to be a highlight in their calendar, always bringing out the best in enthusiasm and musicianship from their pupils.
• Flute and whistle. Brian Finnegan (Flook, Kan) and Katherine Mann.
• Fiddle. Jock Tyldesley (New Rope String band) and Tola Custy (Guidewires, Lunasa)
• Guitar. Ed Boyd (Flook),
• Melodeon. Andy Cutting (Blowzabella, Topette, Leveret)
During the week all participants will spend some time working in their own instrument classes, and some time in mixed band groups. This gives all course members the chance to make progress on their own instrument as well as in performing as part of a group.
Burwell Bash isn’t like any other summer school. Our pupils come from near and far to be a part of the week, and once inside become totally immersed in the music going on around them. With all ages and abilities taught together, Burwell is a highly nurturing environment for young talent. For many people being at Burwell Bash has brought them increased confidence. For others it has had an entirely different, holistic or professional impact on their lives. This makes Burwell Bash a fantastic space for those new to folk and budding professionals alike to hone their skills and develop their talent.
